URAP Letter to Hon. Jagmeet Singh

URAP Letter to Hon. Jagmeet Singh
Leader of NDP, Member of Parliament

April 8, 2021

Dear MP Singh,
Our partner organization of Canada Hong Kong Alliance has recently uncovered a voice recording
where Bill Yee, the co-chair of the Chinese Advisory Committee of BC NDP Premier John Horgan, who is
actively denying the genocide happening in East Turkestan. We, as Uyghur Rights Advocacy Project, on
behalf of all concerned citizens of Canada and allies of Uyghurs and the people of East Turkestan, are
writing to you in protest of these forms of violence perpetated against survivors of the Uyghur
genocide and their families.

As early as 2010, former CSIS director Richard Fadden has warned that “ foreign powers are infiltrating
Canadian political circles and influencing public servants, fuelling a growing concern about economic
espionage in Canada”

In the same report, called out number of municipal politicians in British Columbia who were being
influenced by agents and officials from other countries.

Many experts have been warning that “ China uses a vast network of political, business and media
operatives directed from Beijing, known as the United Front, in attempts to co-opt Chinese Canadian
communities and leaders, and most importantly put Canada as permissive target for China’s
interference.

The Chinese Communist Party has always aimed at targeting politicians at the provincial and municipal
levels, especially through community groups that pose as diaspora communities. It is also important to
note that these particular groups are a small minority and do not broadly represent the Chinese
Canadian diaspora community. By capitalizing on political leaders’ lack of awareness of foreign
influence operations, the CCP offers lucrative investment projects, community initiatives and business
deals that will bait political leaders into allying themselves with the CCP.

Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the Standing Committee of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, after going through serious Parliamentary Hearings by listening witnesses, survivors, experts and independent scholars, have concluded and acknowledged the crime that China is committing against Uyghurs constitute textbook example of Genocide.

Independent studies of more than 50 legal scholars recently examined the China’s breach of 1948 Geneva convention and released its study with the conclusion that China has breached all 5 elements of Genocide convention and committed the crime of genocide and Crime against the humanity to Uyghurs in East Turkistan.

In recent survey, more than 83% Canadians have supported the unanimous parliamentary vote acknowledging the atrocities committed by China against Uyghurs and other Turkic people in East Turkistan (China calls as Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region) constituted genocide.

Thousands of Uyghur Canadians do not have any means of communication with their parents and loved ones and China blocked and cut of all channels of family bonds.

URAP firmly rejects the pro-Beijing talking points parroted by the high-level government affiliated officials in Canada like Bill Yee that contradicts the resounding parliamentary vote that acknowledged Uyghur genocide.

This is not the first time our community has witnessed your party’s MPs & MLAs siding with the CCP
over those who survive their immense violence. There is a growing distrust of the NDP among our
community members, even those who identify as progressives, we have seen no accountability or
actions taken in response to individuals who have supported the CCP’s propagating efforts to dismiss
human rights concerns in China.

We are writing from a place of concern, in hopes that you and your party will take a stronger stance –
rather than back away from this discussion. The NDP is a party who has always stood up for human
rights, we ask you to do the same for us.
